Do’s and Don’ts of Shopping for a Musician:

    Do:

    • Be sure when shopping for instruments that it’s something they really want. When I was younger my parents bought me a guitar for Christmas that seemed just fine when they bought it. But after I opened it and actually started playing on it, I found a number of things wrong with it. The pick-ups kept cutting in and out and it couldn’t stay in tune.
    • Ask advice if you don’t know about music-related gifts. Everybody knows somebody that knows a musician. I suggest talking to at least a couple of them and reading the reviews on the product before buying it.
    • Buy from well known websites. You might not think that it would make much difference when shopping for CD’s or some product that is the same on every site but it does. Not only will the better known sites have better customer service, and sales but they’re also going to have a more secure checkout process. Which is pretty important considering how much credit card fraud there is today.
    Don’t:

    • Judge an instrument by it’s cover. I’m sure that digital piano with all the gadgets and buttons looks pretty neat, but how’s the sound quality? I know the digital piano I bought might be a little more expensive and have less flashy buttons, but its sound was recorded from a Steinway Grand Piano, some of the best in the world.
    • Buy because it’s cheap. Find out what they want. Find out what the high and low end of that product are, and what makes them so. Figure out how much you want to spend, then find a sale on a higher end product with great reviews. You’ll get what you pay for, and if you shop smart you can get even more.
    • Assume they like what you like. I know Elvis was pretty cool and hip when you were a kid but believe me when i say that the definition of rock and roll has changed quite a bit since then. It may sound like nails on a chalk board to you, but if your kids like it and the message it’s delivering is something you’re ok with, you’re gift is going to go over a lot better.
