Seafood

Seafood is an ideal Christmas gift for the person on your list who doesn’t have access to fresh seafood, or who has never tried certain kinds of seafood, or who you know already loves seafood.

What are the most commonly consumed seafood items in the USA? The top three for the past three years are:

  • 1. Shrimp
  • 2. Tuna
  • 3. Salmon

Also making the list of popular seafood were clams, cod, tilapia, catfish, and crab.

Ever wonder what kind of seafood was in McDonald’s Fillet-o-Fish Sandwich? It’s known as Alaska Pollack.

Ever wonder which seafood one should stay away from for health reasons? Here the latest “stay away from” list:

  • King Crab
  • Caviar
  • Atlantic Bluefin Tuna
  • Orange Roughy
  • Atlantic Flatfish (sole, halibut and flounder)
  • American Eel
  • Atlantic Cod
  • Imported Catfish
  • Chilean Sea Bass
  • Atlantic and farmed Salmon
  • Imported Shrimp

Is Seafood Safe to Eat?

Evidence suggests that fish and shellfish consumption can drop the risk of heart disease related death by 36%, thanks to fish’s high potency of our friends the omega-3 fatty acids. Diets rich in fish or fish oil have been found to reduce one’s overall mortality rate by 17%.

Infants and young children benefit greatly from the omega-3 fatty acids too! Seafood aids in improved brain development early on; and children can even reap this benefit from pregnant or nursing mothers who consume fish.

There has been some talk around whether the levels of mercury consumed while eating seafood can be harmful. To put that to rest, researchers have discovered no definite evidence that low-level mercury consumption through seafood has any damaging effects on adults.

So make a point to get that seafood lover on your list some healthy, nutrient rich food that will please not only their heart (literally and figuratively!) but their taste buds too!
