What is a Christmas Advent Calendar?

An advent calendar is a special calendar that counts down the days until Christmas. It starts with December first and goes through December 25th. Usually it ends there, as Christmas day arrives. But some advent calendars go until December 31st as some families celebrate all the way to New Year’s Eve.

Advent calendars have been around a long while. Children have always waited eagerly for Christmas to arrive and perhaps they started as a way to keep children entertained until the big night. There are many vintage advent calendars that you can find online or at antique shops.

Advent calendars have little doors in them that provide a little reward or figurine when it is opened. Some calendars are even made of chocolate, so the child gets a candy every day that she opens a door. The doors must remain closed until the date that is on it. In other words, eager children can’t peek and open all the doors at once. It lessens the expectation. There’s nothing left to look forward to if they’ve already had a look at all the treasures behind the doors.
Sometimes an advent calendar will be made with pockets that hold a special ornament or even a saying. As the day approaches, that pocket can be emptied. The ornaments can be placed on the tree or the saying can be read. Usually advent calendars have a Christmas theme with candles, bells, holly, mistletoe, sleighs and other festive holiday icons as the designs on the doors. The prizes or figures inside are usually toy soldiers or Christmas trees, Santa or baby dolls. Tiny resin or wooden ornaments are most common.

Many people like to make their own advent calendars. You can make one out of felt and hang it as a wall hanging once December rolls around. Make it by cutting a large piece of felt and then adhering or sewing little pockets deep enough to hold a small Christmas gift. Number each of the pockets from one to twenty five. Place a small trinket, coin or other small item into each pocket. Children and grandchildren will have fun exploring what’s in each day’s pocket. You can put edible items, or have items you reuse each year. Once the day has passed, you can prop the item up in the pocket on display. Any date that hasn’t come yet will remain with its contents tucked inside. You can hang a dowel through the top of the felt by folding it over and sewing it or gluing it. Hang a string and place on a nail or hook. You can decorate the felt with glitter, sequins or cutouts or you can leave it as is. You may even want to experiment with shapes like Christmas trees or snowmen as the outer felt outline.

Advent is a wonderful time of looking forward to something good. Many churches will begin the season of advent with three purple candles and one pink. The pink is for the day the Christ child arrived. You can have your own advent countdown too with your own advent calendar and/or wreath. It’s fun for children to know how many days until Santa comes, and it gives the adults a good reminder of just how few shopping days are left!

Christmas Tree Lighting Customs at the White House

Ever wonder how the White House celebrates Christmas? One way is with a giant, fully-lit Christmas tree.

The White House is, of course, home to the President as well as his family. They are part of a season-long whirlwind of events that bring Christmas to life. One of the most exciting events that kicks off the holiday season in Washington, D.C. is the lighting of the National Christmas Tree.

The tradition of illuminating a tree at the White House began in 1923 with President Calvin Coolidge. It is tradition that a tree of great splendor be lit to begin the Christmas festivities not only in Washington, but around the country as well. Once the National tree has been lit, Americans feel that the Christmas season has really gotten started.

In 1978, the tree that is currently lit was brought in from York, Pennsylvania. It is a towering blue spruce that stands 40 feet tall. This tree stands on what is called the Ellipse, the grounds south of the White House. Along with the tree, the “Pathway to Peace” is also lit on the same night. This is a walkway lined with 56 smaller trees. The trees represent the 50 states, D.C. and the five U.S. territories. Although the location of the tree has been moved on and off the Ellipse, that is where the first tree stood and it is where it stands today. The national tree is for everyone in the nation, and this holiday gift towers over the area.

The ceremony, which is now called the Christmas Pageant of Peace is held in early December. The tree remains lit until January 1st. The ceremony is very popular and tickets to see it live are offered via lottery early in November. Famous names come to perform at the stage at the Ellipse. Volunteer acts perform every night through the season. So there’s always something to see.

The only years that did not see a lit tree were from 1942-1944. During World War II, the tree remained dark in observance of the war effort. In 1945, the tradition resumed to great fanfare. The darkness of the war was then over.

Different entities have been asked to provide decorations for the tree each year. Groups from each state contribute ornaments which are then encased in plastic globes to withstand the weather.

The lighting of the National Christmas Tree has become an event that is much anticipated by everyone including school children. President Reagan was the first to invite a child to light the tree along with him and his wife. The child was a terminally ill child who had made a wish through the Make-a-Wish Foundation to be allowed to help light the tree. Every year since, children have been helping the President light the very special tree. The honor is only given to children who have proven their dedication to volunteering for their country in their local neighborhoods. Previous children who have been chosen have worked in their free time to feed and clothe the hungry and homeless.

General Electric has provided the lights for the national tree since 1968. The lights, once screw-in bulbs that had to be replaced manually if they blew out, are now long-lasting LED bulbs. The lights are now more energy efficient and comply with the White House’s request that a more green solution be used for this magnificent tree.

Tips for choosing an artificial Christmas tree

When you don’t want to or can’t have a live tree in your home for Christmas, you can still have a lovely tree on display. The artificial trees on the market today are lusher and fuller than ever. Some of them look so realistic you’d think they were real. Others come in funky colors perfect for a mod and hip décor.
Start by assessing what kind of space you have for a tree. Can you get an eight foot tree into your house? How high are your ceilings? Do you live in a small apartment? If space is tight, opt for a potted artificial tree. These trees are tall and thin and often resemble topiaries in that they look almost carved. Because they reach upward and not outward, they’re perfect for a cramped space.

If you have high ceilings, the entire world of artificial trees is open to you. But if you have a modest home with standard ceiling heights, you can go with any number of trees that you’ll want to bring out year after year. You’ll just have to forego the 12 foot trees.

Believe it or not, you can now get online Christmas gifts, even Christmas trees! Some web shops offer artificial trees year round. You can select from pink, blue and even black boughs. Anything and everything is yours for the asking. The allure of the artificial tree is that it can be set up and taken down every year and you never have to buy a tree again. But with styles this cool, you may want to get a new one each year or put trees in more than one room.
When selecting your artificial tree, go for one that has realistic looking branches. Some are so fake and look sadly sparse. If there’s too much space and not enough greenery around the branches, no amount of ornaments is going to fill it in. Opt for a tree that has a point at the top like a real tree would and tapers out to a wide bottom.

When you set up your tree, place it in a sturdy tree stand. Don’t try to rig up something or just lean it against a wall. You’ll be sorry when you hear the tree crash in the middle of the night with all your glass ornaments along with it. Place a tree skirt over the bottom of the stand and circle it around the tree. Now you’re ready to decorate. Artificial trees can take just about any ornamentation you can dish out short of an open flame. Go ahead and do up a tree full of tinsel or a themed collection of ornaments. Do a different color scheme every year by changing out your tree skirt and ornaments. Try reds one year, golds another and blues still another year.

Some people like having a tree but not setting it up. If you’re one of them, place a specially made bag over the tree when you’re done with the season and stand it up in an attic or garage with the ornaments still on it. Next year when you go to get it out of storage, it will already be decorated. There’s something to be said for an instantly decorated tree. You can get right into the holiday spirit without having to do much work.
